WARM BODIES (2013)

'What are you?'

This is the question constantly asked by Teresa Palmer's slightly irritating Julie in regards to Nicholas Hoult's attractive, zombified R. The film follows their unlikely romance in a dystopian America wherein an unidentified source has resulted in the majority of the population becoming undead creatures. It's all very consciously reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet except y'know... with zombies.

R comes across as an extremely likeable character, particularly for one that has a habit of eating brains. This is created through his amusing inner monologue which narrates almost the entire film. At times, it feels like mere adolescent rants as opposed to the conflicted thoughts of a zombie however, the endearing relationship between the two protagonists eclipses this minor fault.

In many ways, the film can be considered an interesting metaphor for the importance of physical interaction in modern day society. At a time when we all communicate through computers, this reminder that we cannot simply rely on these technological advancements to maintain a healthy relationship. 

This is a new take on the RomZomCom subgenre that was created by Edgar Wright with Shaun of the Dead (2004). That, for the limited people who read this blog and even more limited people who haven't seen the film, concerns Simon Pegg's titular character attempting to rekindle his relationship with his girlfriend whilst avoiding a zombie apocalypse. For some reason, I feel that both films' narratives are more like that of an indie film despite their production values being reminiscent of a mainstream feature.

I'm concerned that people may simply dismiss this film as being another Twilight-esque, supernatural love story however, it is so much more than that. It feels relevant, intelligent and overwhelmingly enjoyable- three adjectives that one would struggle to associate with Stephanie Meyer's series. So, if you're planning a cinema trip this weekend and are unsure what to see, I offer my suggestion of Warm Bodies. You won't be disappointed!
